[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hi, I'm Maggie. [00:00:01] Speaker B: And I'm Nicole. Welcome to the DAC Dyslexia and Coffee Podcast. We're so happy you could join us. We're both moms and dyslexia interventionists who want to talk about our students and children. What dyslexia is, how it affects our kids, strategies to help and topics related to other disabilities will also be covered in this podcast. Parents are not alone, and we want to give voice to the concerns and struggles we are all having. This is a safe place to learn more about how to help our children grow and succeed in school, in the world. Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the conversation. [00:00:34] Speaker A: Hi, everybody. Welcome to episode 82 of Dyslexia and Coffee Podcast. We're going to start today's episode like we do every time, which is with the concept of the week. So the concept of the week is our opportunity as practitioners to kind of peel. Peel back the curtain a little bit and let our listeners in to an intervention session. So we like to teach about things that we would either teach directly to our students or their parents. So today's concept of the week is a contraction. Contraction literally means to pull together, contract. This is when we take two words and we pull them together. Some of our letters are left out and replaced with an apostrophe. So, for example, the words I am, we would pull that together and we would have the word I'm or like you are. We pull that together and we'd have your good. [00:01:40] Speaker B: So welcome to episode 82. This is a really special episode because we are going to interview Aiden and Wilson today. Who Aiden is Ms. Maggie's son and Wilson is my son. And we're going to talk about ADHD and dyslexia today. [00:01:58] Speaker A: Yeah. And a little bit of other things, probably. And probably. And listeners, this is real world. So, yes, these are our actually real children. [00:02:07] Speaker B: And here we go. [00:02:09] Speaker A: And here we go. [00:02:10] Speaker B: So, Aiden, can you tell me a little bit about yourself? What is your favorite subject? What would you like to do for fun? [00:02:17] Speaker C: I like to play football. Baseball sometimes. Baseball maybe. [00:02:23] Speaker A: Okay. [00:02:23] Speaker C: And pretend. [00:02:25] Speaker A: And pretend. You are really good about playing. [00:02:27] Speaker B: That is true. Aiden, how old are you? [00:02:29] Speaker C: I'm eight years old. [00:02:31] Speaker B: Okay. [00:02:32] Speaker A: Yeah. Okay. I'm gonna get to ask Wilson his question. So, Wilson, tell me a little bit about yourself. First of all, how old are you? [00:02:41] Speaker C: 10. [00:02:41] Speaker A: You're 10. What is your favorite subject or favorite thing to do? [00:02:49] Speaker C: Pretend I'm playing baseball. [00:02:52] Speaker A: Play baseball? [00:02:53] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:54] Speaker A: That's awesome. You kind of like sports in general, don't you, buddy? [00:02:57] Speaker C: Yeah. Yeah. [00:02:58] Speaker A: You played basketball this season? [00:03:00] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:03:00] Speaker A: Yeah. That's awesome. Okay. [00:03:06] Speaker B: So, Aiden, what do you know about adhd? [00:03:10] Speaker C: Not much. [00:03:12] Speaker A: No? [00:03:13] Speaker C: No. Well, it's hard. [00:03:19] Speaker A: That's a hard question. Yeah. [00:03:20] Speaker C: Okay. [00:03:21] Speaker A: That's okay. That's a hard question. [00:03:22] Speaker B: That is a hard question. [00:03:23] Speaker C: Yeah, I know. I. But I do think a lot of other things. [00:03:29] Speaker A: Like, do you mean your brain thinks about a lot of things? Okay. [00:03:34] Speaker B: Okay. What about you, Wilson? What do you know about adhd? [00:03:38] Speaker A: Nothing. You know nothing about adhd? [00:03:41] Speaker C: I don't know what ADHD is. Well, that's a good question. [00:03:47] Speaker A: Yeah. Do you know what it stands for? Aiden, either one of you. Do either one of you know? [00:03:51] Speaker C: I have no idea what it stands for. [00:03:54] Speaker A: Oh, okay. Well, ADHD stands for Attention Deficit High Hyperactivity Disorder. [00:04:02] Speaker C: Ah, that explains everything. [00:04:05] Speaker A: That explains everything. [00:04:08] Speaker C: Maybe a little bit. Maybe a little bit adhd Do. [00:04:14] Speaker B: I think it makes. So it's different for everybody. So I think for you, it makes your brain move a lot faster than other people sometimes. [00:04:24] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. The wiggles. [00:04:25] Speaker B: The wiggles. Sometimes your body moves more, right? Yeah, Sometimes. Does it? It's hard to focus on stuff. [00:04:36] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:04:36] Speaker B: Can you say words? He's shaking his head yes. [00:04:40] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:04:42] Speaker C: Resemble is where I was born on December 21st, right. [00:04:46] Speaker A: Aiden's birthday is also in December. [00:04:49] Speaker C: What day? December 1st. [00:04:52] Speaker A: Yeah. Wait, what about dyslexia? Do either one of you know what dyslexia is? [00:04:58] Speaker C: Nope. I don't even think I have it. Do I have it? [00:05:02] Speaker A: You don't have dyslexia. [00:05:05] Speaker B: Mohsin does. Right? Yeah. [00:05:09] Speaker A: It's fun. [00:05:10] Speaker C: It's fun. [00:05:11] Speaker A: What's fun about it? [00:05:13] Speaker B: What's fun about it, buddy? [00:05:15] Speaker C: Toys. Like toy lightsabers. But Tommy. [00:05:20] Speaker B: Oh. Cause Tommy has toys. [00:05:21] Speaker A: Lightsabers. Because you get to go to intervention with Mr. Tabby. [00:05:24] Speaker B: Yes, that is fun. And what does. What do you do with Mr. Tommy? [00:05:31] Speaker C: You do regular stuff. [00:05:36] Speaker B: What's regular stuff? [00:05:38] Speaker C: Like, [00:05:40] Speaker A: do you read? [00:05:41] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:05:42] Speaker B: What else do you learn? [00:05:46] Speaker C: Dinosaurs. [00:05:48] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:06:08] Speaker A: That's good. [00:06:09] Speaker B: So what did you learn the other day? What big word did you learn? [00:06:26] Speaker C: Autobiography. [00:06:28] Speaker A: Yeah, Autobiography. [00:06:31] Speaker C: I know. [00:06:32] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:06:32] Speaker C: A story about your life. [00:06:34] Speaker A: Yeah. A story about your own life. One that you write about your own life. I love that. I love that, Wilson. [00:06:40] Speaker C: And autobiographical. [00:06:44] Speaker A: Autobiological. You are learning about suffix endings. When we add a suffix Ending it changes the word. So proud. [00:06:51] Speaker C: I'm so proud. [00:06:53] Speaker A: Mr. Tommy's doing such a good job. Okay, so this next question, boys, I want to ask Wilson. So, Wilson, what does it feel like inside your brain when you are trying to pay attention. [00:07:11] Speaker B: As he. Wilson? [00:07:14] Speaker A: Yeah. What about you, Aiden? What about you? What does it feel like in. Inside your brain? Yeah, Aiden, do you think you can think about like. [00:07:20] Speaker C: Aiden? [00:07:21] Speaker A: Okay, so you're doing a good job showing, but no one can see you. So can you put some words to that? You made a. [00:07:27] Speaker C: You made a face asleep. [00:07:29] Speaker A: You feel like your brain is asleep [00:07:31] Speaker C: when you pay attention, [00:07:34] Speaker B: Wiggles. And his is asleep. [00:07:36] Speaker A: Okay. [00:07:37] Speaker C: Me. [00:07:37] Speaker A: Interesting. [00:07:39] Speaker B: No, that's what Aiden said. [00:07:41] Speaker A: Wilson, what are some things that feel easy for you? [00:07:46] Speaker C: Hugging. [00:07:47] Speaker B: Hugging A. [00:07:49] Speaker A: That's really sweet. [00:07:50] Speaker C: And my hugging my friend Aiden. [00:07:52] Speaker A: And hugging. [00:07:53] Speaker C: And Mason and me, of course. [00:07:57] Speaker A: What about some things that feel hard? [00:08:01] Speaker C: My braces hurt me. [00:08:04] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:05] Speaker A: Yeah. That is hard. That is hard. [00:08:07] Speaker B: What about with your brain? What is hard? Tell me. [00:08:16] Speaker C: Worry. [00:08:17] Speaker B: Worries. You have lots of worries. What kind of worries? [00:08:25] Speaker A: I know you can see yourself in the real world. [00:08:29] Speaker B: Real world. Distracted by the computer. How about Aiden? [00:08:35] Speaker C: How. [00:08:36] Speaker B: What are some things that feel easy for you? [00:08:41] Speaker C: Eating, Watching tv. [00:08:46] Speaker A: What about some skills? Like. I struggle with that too, sometimes. [00:09:53] Speaker B: Yeah? Yeah. [00:09:54] Speaker C: I'm tired. [00:09:57] Speaker A: Wilson, when do you feel like you're at your best or like you're most happy? [00:10:04] Speaker C: Spending time with my family and friends. When. When are some times you feel like you're at your best or most happy? [00:10:22] Speaker C: When I'm spending time with family and friends. [00:10:24] Speaker A: When you're spending time with family and friends. [00:10:26] Speaker C: And I'm outside. [00:10:28] Speaker A: And you're outside. That's a good one. Yeah, me too. [00:10:31] Speaker C: Watching tv. [00:10:32] Speaker A: Yeah, me too. [00:10:34] Speaker C: Breaking stuff. [00:10:36] Speaker A: Breaking stuff. [00:10:37] Speaker C: Oh, my lord. You Mean Legos? [00:10:43] Speaker B: Maybe. [00:10:45] Speaker C: Sometimes. [00:10:47] Speaker A: Okay, I'm gonna ask one more final question. Wilson. [00:10:54] Speaker C: What do you. [00:10:55] Speaker A: What do you think your parents or teachers should know about a student with adhd? Or maybe, let's just say a student who learns a little bit differently. What do you think parents or teachers should know? [00:11:11] Speaker C: Uh. It's hard. [00:11:14] Speaker A: That is a hard question. [00:11:16] Speaker B: It is hard. [00:11:17] Speaker A: That is a hard question. [00:11:18] Speaker C: I know. You're not sleepy naked. [00:11:21] Speaker B: What would you want your teacher to know about you? [00:11:32] Speaker C: Super hard. [00:11:33] Speaker B: It's super hard to be at school? [00:11:35] Speaker C: No, this question. [00:11:37] Speaker A: Oh, this question is really hard. It's really hard. Is there anything that, like, helps you learn a little bit better, you think? [00:11:47] Speaker B: Nothing. [00:11:49] Speaker A: Aiden, what about you? What? What would you like parents or teachers to know about a student who learned a little bit differently? [00:12:01] Speaker C: I got mine. People making fun of me. [00:12:07] Speaker A: Can you say that again? [00:12:09] Speaker C: People making fun of me. [00:12:11] Speaker A: Yeah. That's really hard. [00:12:12] Speaker B: That is hard. [00:12:13] Speaker A: That's really hard. [00:12:14] Speaker B: Is that because you learn differently than they do? [00:12:18] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:12:18] Speaker A: Yeah. What does that make you feel really brave to share. [00:12:21] Speaker B: That was brave. [00:12:22] Speaker A: Thank you for sharing that. It's important that people get to hear that. [00:12:27] Speaker C: I think the teacher should know that. I'd rather be somewhere else. [00:12:34] Speaker A: You'd rather be somewhere else? [00:12:36] Speaker B: That is very honest. [00:12:37] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:12:39] Speaker A: Do you think that there's anything that she could do to kind of, like, help you feel more comfortable at school? [00:12:47] Speaker C: No. No, I'd rather just fall asleep. [00:12:52] Speaker A: You'd rather fall asleep? [00:12:53] Speaker C: Okay. [00:12:54] Speaker B: Is there something that your teacher could do to make it better at. [00:13:05] Speaker C: Could maybe. No. Not good. No. Okay, so tell them to stop being mean to Wilson. [00:13:20] Speaker A: Tell something to Wilson. Oh, sweetie. [00:13:23] Speaker B: Yeah. That is something that they should do. [00:13:25] Speaker A: Absolutely. [00:13:26] Speaker B: I agree. [00:13:27] Speaker A: I agree completely. I agree completely. Okay, so we like to do one last thing. So we like to end our episodes with what's going on. We call it beyond dyslexia, which means kind of in our real lives. Like, what's going on in our real life. So we'll start with Wilson. Wilson, what is one thing that you have been doing lately? [00:13:57] Speaker C: Play guitar. Want to play baseball? [00:14:01] Speaker B: Up. You're going to play baseball pretty soon. [00:14:03] Speaker A: And sing [00:14:05] Speaker C: so nicely. That's amazing. Good one, buddy. [00:14:12] Speaker B: That was good. [00:14:14] Speaker A: Aiden Hayes, what about you? What's one thing you've been up to lately? [00:14:20] Speaker C: Singing in my room alone. [00:14:22] Speaker A: Singing in your room alone. That is true. I can say that is true. Any other things? Like, have we been doing any fun things lately? [00:14:32] Speaker C: Planning about my life. [00:14:34] Speaker A: Planning about your life and what we're [00:14:36] Speaker C: gonna do on the vacation. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Wisconsin does the best. Yeah. [00:14:45] Speaker A: We are making a vacation. [00:14:48] Speaker C: I will be next to Aiden to sleep next to Aiden. [00:14:51] Speaker A: Yeah, that'll be. [00:14:52] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. This is gonna be a fun weekend. [00:14:54] Speaker A: This is gonna be a fun weekend. [00:14:55] Speaker C: Yes. And we're gonna be loud.
